ABOUT US – Food and Nutrition

working with you to create the stars of the future

We are committed to healthy eating at Little Stars, and all dishes offered are healthy choices.

Children are offered food regularly, throughout the day. Morning sessions include a free breakfast between 8am – 8:30am, a mid-morning snack and a two course, home cooked, hot lunch. Afternoon sessions include a home cooked tea. All meals are prepared in our kitchen from healthy ingredients, including our own produce, without unnecessary salt or sugar.

All of our dishes incorporate food from different cultures, with different flavours and textures to suit different pallets. Our menus have a weekly structure which includes vegetarian dishes, meat dishes and fish dishes. The menus work over a three week basis, so there is always something different to challenge the children’s taste buds. We vary our menus depending on the season and we cram our meals full with as many vegetables as possible – but we do hide these well so little eyes do not always know how many vegetables they are actually eating! All dietary requirements can be catered for and fresh fruit is available daily as an alternative to dessert.

Children are offered milk and water to drink, and can access fresh water throughout the day. The children are encouraged to select and serve their snack themselves to develop confidence, independence and choice.

Meal times at Little Stars are a social event, enjoyed with the other children and staff. The nursery staff are encouraged to sit and eat with the children and to help them develop positive eating habits and manners, as well as social skills. Each day, parents are given information about the food their child has had during the day.

Our  kitchen garden (pictured left) is where children grow vegetables to eat at lunch and snack time. So far this year we have grown apples, cherries, sweetcorn, spinach, chard, garlic, sweet peas, potatoes, carrots, pumpkins, little gem lettuce, and beetroot. The children learn all about how to grow the vegetables and fruit. They are genuinely surprised to pull a patch of green and see a carrot at the end of it, and in less than two hours it may be on their plate for dinner! The children also spend time learning why fruit and vegetables are so important in a healthy diet.
